Meeting Name
The lawsuit that the United States Women’s National Team filed against U.S. Soccer in advance of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup gave renewed force to the push against gender inequity in professional sports. But gender discrimination in sports starts at an early age: disparities between boys’ and girls’ youth sports programs are apparent across all aspects of play, from access to and quality of fields, to differences in equipment, coaching, and other resources. For girls who become professional athletes, a significant pay gap is stacked on top of that resource gap. Panelists Kim Turner and Elizabeth Kristen of Legal Aid at Work will discuss their Fair Play for Girls in Sports program and the implications of the gender discrimination that persists through all levels of athletics, and Jeanifer Parsigian of Winston & Strawn will discuss her work with the U.S. Women’s Soccer litigation. Labor and employment attorney and Berkeley Law alum Eduard Meleshinsky will moderate.
